More than 100 meteors per hour are expected to flash across the sky during the peak of the Geminid meteor shower on the night of Thursday, Dec. 13. Clear skies permitting, be sure to head out to Medoc Mountain State Park to take in the show.
The Geminid meteor shower, which was first recorded in observations from a Mississippi River riverboat in 1833, are particles in a stream of debris left by near-Earth object 3200 Phaethon as it orbits the sun every 1.4 years.
While the program at Medoc Mountain State Park begins at 5PM, astronomical conditions should be prime for viewing until 2 a.m. The moon will be in first quarter and setting at about midnight, meaning the night sky could provide a nicely darkened backdrop for the meteors
